FATAL ACCIDENT IN HEARST

It is with regret that I have to report that on October 18th our Local lost a well respected trade union activist when 45 years old Brother Michel Tremblay died of massive injuries incurred at the Tembec sawmill in Hearst.
While working to dislodge some small logs from underneath the rollers of a DDM6 machine, hydraulic rollers from above came down and crushed him. Brother Tremblay was later pronounced dead at Notre Dame Hospital. The Ministry of Labour investigated with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police and the Local is waiting for a report from the Ministry.
Brother Tremblay had worked at the mill for the past 27 years and was a member of the plant grievance committee. He is survived by a wife and two grown children. This is a terrible tragedy for his family and the whole community; Michel will be missed by all those that knew him.

Yuletide Safety At Home

Every year in Canada, there is an increase of house fires around the holidays. This is due to many factors and here are a few points to consider in making your home safer;

Electrical decorations:
• Check all wires and connectors before installing any light strings or other powered decorations;
• Do not overload circuits by connecting everything into a single plug;
• Do not run extension cords under carpets where they may be damaged by traffic.

Christmas trees:
• If you are using a natural tree, water it often to avoid it drying out;
• Ensure that your artificial tree is made of fire-proof material;
• Do not overload your tree with lights to help reduce sources of heat.

Home heating system:
It goes without saying that your heating system works hardest in the winter, it is therefore necessary to ensure that it is functioning properly before the cold season. Furthermore, if you plan on traveling during the holidays to be with friends or family, it may well be that your heating system will remain without surveillance for an extended period. Before leaving, lower all thermostats to avoid overheating but, most importantly, leave a key with a friend or neighbor who will periodically check your home while you are gone.

But above all, remember that alcohol and traveling do not mix well, avoid drinking and driving.

Happy holidays all;
Jacques Jean
