AND
PREPARATION FOR NEGOCIATIONS
It is with great regret that I have to mention the loss of a good Union brother. Brother Michel Tremblay died October 17th 2006 in a work related accident at the Tembec-Hearst operation. Michel was a dedicated husband and father, a hard worker and an active Union member who had at heart the well being of his working Brothers and Sisters. On behalf of all the members of Local 1-2995, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to Michel’s family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
On a brighter note, we have a new group that voted to join our Local. Cheminis Lumber, located in Larder Lake, Ontario, is a small sawmill operation with 30 workers. We are scheduled to start negotiations in November. I hope that in the next issue we will be able to report on their new Collective Agreement. We are presently still negotiating with Columbia Forest Products and we are getting geared up to start negotiations with Tembec and other independent sawmills and woodlands operations that are at contract’s end. So, as you can imagine, the New Year will be a very busy one.
Your Local is currently involved in a joint campaign with the C.E.P and the O.F.L. Together we are asking the municipalities across western and eastern Ontario to support us on an 8 point program aimed at assuring the revival, and possibly survival of Ontario's forest industry. We are asking the municipalities to adopt a resolution to support this program and help us lobby the Ontario Liberal Government.
In solidarity;
Guy Bourgouin
